General Bill was a very dear friend to me. I first met the General over 25 years ago at a local pub and we had a lifelong interest in British sports cars and history. We would hang out several times a week. Our friendship lasted a lot longer than the pubs did but we always managed to find a new place to meet. Whenever I would see him he would ask me what car I drove.
He referred to Golf as “pasture pool” and quoted Mark Twain as saying “Golf was a long walk spoiled”. When I would misbehave and say something on the naughty side he would say “oh dear “. The General loved Winston Churchill and W C Fields and would quote them often, perfectly mimicking their voices. When I would ask him how he was doing he would joke by saying “sober but it’s still early.” We would share history and automotive books and watch Rays games together. He was like a father to me and a grandfather to my son. He brought communion and performed last rights to my dear and feisty mother. His words at her service were very consoling. He never said a bad thing about anyone. I miss William Bedford Cass and as my son amply pointed out he is very likely driving his British sport car on the highway to heaven.
