Obituary of Captain Richard Alan Boyd SC, USN (ret)

Capt Richard Alan Boyd SC, USN(ret), passed away August 17, 2023. He was born January 1, 1954, the youngest of 4 children to Helen (Yomant) and Wallace Boyd. He was raised in St. Petersburg and graduated with honors from St Pete High school in 1971, where he played football. He graduated from Florida State University (Go Noles!) with a Bachelors of Science degree in Marketing and was president of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity in his sophomore and junior year. He was commissioned as an Ensign in the US Navy in 1975 upon graduation from FSU and was a Navy Supply Corps officer for over 27 years. After 4 years at sea duty on the USS Enterprise (CVN65) and USS Constellation (CV64) and two Pacific/Indian ocean deployments, he was selected by the Navy to attend the University of Florida and earned his MBA degree in 1982. He served on 4 different aircraft carriers and made 3 west PAC deployments, specializing in aviation logistics including Supply Officer of the USS Nimitz (CVN68) from 1993-95. He lived the saying “ Join the Navy - see the world”. He was stationed twice in foreign countries with the Navy at various bases, at Navy Supply Depot Yokosuka Japan from 1987-90 and Supply Officer at NAS Sigonella Italy from 1995-98. Throughout his distinguished Navy career, he had visited and spent time in over 34 foreign countries including Antarctica. He finished his Navy career at the Defense Logistics Agency specializing in Information Technology infrastructure and budgeting. He retired from the United States Navy at the end of 2002. Throughout his stellar career he was awarded over 16 medals including the Defense Meritorious Service award, 4 Navy/Marine Corp Commendation medals and Kuwait Liberation medal. In 2003, He was selected by the Drug Enforcement Administration to modernize their Diversion Control office and was responsible as the Chief of the DEA registration program for coordinating the annual registration of 1.5 million medical providers and controlled substance pharmaceutical companies collecting over $350 million dollars annually to fund the Diversion Control program at DEA. He retired from the DEA in 2015 and came home to Florida. He became interested in family history and was able to trace family lineages to the ancestors coming from Lithuania, Sweden and Ireland. Growing up he enjoyed fishing, hunting, then later snow skiing and visiting the north Georgia mountains where he later built a cabin. He was predeceased by his parents Wallace and Helen Boyd, his oldest sister Barbara, his first wife Brenda and their unborn baby boy, and his second wife Mary Beckman. He is survived by his loving daughters Michele Boyd and Allyson Ford along with his grandson Shane. He was so incredibly proud of both daughters! His girls meant the world to him! He will be missed by his big brother Kevin and his wife Lucy, who were both so very embracing and loving to his whole family over all these years; his sister Carol who lives in Georgia and helps take care of his life long dream cabin in the Georgia mountains.
