Such a dear friend. I would visit Rose's office almost daily at SHS prior to school starting (we were both early birds). She always brought such warmth and love as we chit chatted and supported each other. Rose always made my day brighter. Sending my deepest condolences and love to the Family.

It was nearly 50 years ago that we met. We went to rival high schools and lived in very different neighborhoods. We were both hired as part-time, night shift, data entry operators for a little-known Philadelphia company that was housed adjacent to the renowned John Wanamaker’s Department Store. We were old enough to get our working papers but not our Leaner's Permits, so we relied on public transportation to get to and from work most days. On the evenings when our shift ended after the last bus to my neighborhood departed, I would have to take a Taxi home. Unfortunately, “hailing a cab” required a skill set that I simply did not have. Rose, however, could “thumb a ride” like no other. If it wasn’t for her, I’d probably still be standing at the corner of 13th and Market Streets to this day. She’d usually watch my futile attempts (while laughing) for a few minutes before coming to my rescue. She would then zero in on an unoccupied taxi, stand in just the right spot and simultaneously flag the cab with one hand while using the other to let out a high-pitched whistle that got the attention of even the most hurried taxi driver. After I was safely tucked inside my ride, she’d skedaddle off to catch her train, while chuckling and waving a hardy goodbye.
We quickly became friends and often went to the Gallery (an indoor shopping mall) on payday to splurge on Annie’s fried dough and coca cola. Whew, what party animals we were!
After working together for over 2 years, it was time for our high school graduations. Most of our friends were excitedly preparing to go to the shore in Atlantic City New Jersey for Senior week, but not Rose and I. We had other plans, big plans! We decided to go to Canada for the week, just the two of us, and we were utterly surprised when our parents actually went along with our plan. It was my first time on a plane, our first time out of the country, and a trip that made our senior week a lifelong memory.
We had an amazing time, getting lost, losing our hotel keys, ordering French Fries two, three, four times a day... and, most of all feeling like grown-ups, perhaps for the first time.
Rose had a very giving nature. I often cajoled her about the time she gave a homeless man money “to go to see his mother.” After thanking her, the man then asked, “wait, how am I supposed to get back here after I see Mom” and she began scrambling for more money to give him.
Fast forward many years later – Rose was married and living in Clearwater. I was pregnant by a guy she had always said “didn’t deserve me” and I needed some time to adjust to the very scary fact that I was going to be a mother. Rose invited me to come and stay with her and her husband and they provided me with just the refuge I needed to prepare for the next chapter in my life. Rose was never heavy-handed with giving advice, however, she was always there to listen to and support her friends. Sometimes due to the busyness of life, years would go by when we didn’t connect but whenever we finally did – it was always as if no time at all had passed.
I don’t envy today’s youth with their Uber and Lyft apps, they’ll never know the feeling of having a bubbly-faced bright-eyed friend hail a cab for them. I don’t envy their text messages because no emoji can capture the sound of a Rose who laughs with her whole body.
I never got to hail a cab for her, I never thanked her for repeatedly telling the teenage version of me that I deserved better, or for making me feel so much at home when I was a scared young 20-something. But I did get to give her a very big, very long-lasting hug the last time I saw her, and I got to promise her a Philly Cheesesteak the last time we texted. I can only hope that somewhere between the mushy hug and the unfulfilled cheesesteak promise she knew how much I treasured her.
I will be forever grateful for my one-of-a-kind friend, whose smile was as big as her heart, whose walk was bouncy and spirited and whose whistle will be permanently etched in my heart.

When I bought my home, Rose came up and helped me paint one of the bedrooms. We had so much fun together. She would do anything to help a friend. She will be dearly missed.
